PhD Exit Seminar: Fingerprints, fish, and flies, oh my! (Some new methods for measuring image features)

Special Events

Speaker: Brian Knight
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Fri, Jan 9 2026, 3:10PM

Computer vision is a rapidly growing area of study due to the development and advancement of computational tools in the last 30-40 years. By now, a wide variety of mathematical models and tools have been developed in order to handle large amounts of image data, yet many individual tasks still require specific domain knowledge and new algorithm development. In this talk several feature extraction problems are discussed, and new solutions proposed. The problems studied here include fine-scale fingerprint registration, explainable image classification, weight prediction of juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) from raw images, and 3D image registration as it relates to reproductive cell development in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster).
