Given a link in $\mathbb{R}^3$, it bounds a Seifert surface. Some Seifert surfaces feature extra structures. A Seifert surfaces obtained by plumbing annuli to a disk is called a plumbing surface. We o discuss a couple of different plumbing surfaces and their plumbing numbers. However, some plumbing surfaces are difficult to control the numbers of plumbing annuli. We also consider a flexible alternative, flat string surfaces. The goal of constructing these surfaces is to classify link properties from these surfaces, such as fiberedness.
