Recent years have seen an exponential growth in the interest among mathematicians in harnessing methods from Machine Learning and AI to assist in the making of new mathematical discoveries. This trend has led to some notable successes, such as the AlphaTensor, FunSearch, and AlphaEvolve projects from Google DeepMind, and holds promise of further transforming and accelerating mathematical research in combinatorics, discrete mathematics, and a growing number of other areas. In this talk I will survey these developments, give concrete examples including some of my own works in progress, and discuss what these trends may spell for research mathematicians, particularly graduate students and early-career researchers, and for how we should be re-evaluating our approach to doing research in the medium-term future and beyond.
