Numerical Methods in Fracture Mechanics

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Dr. Youn-Sha Chan, Oakridge National Laboratory
Location: 693 Kerr
Start time: Wed, Oct 23 2002, 1:10PM

The talk is set to be a brief review of the numerical methods in fracture mechanics. Some background of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) will be given. Numerical methods, including finite difference, finite element, boundary element, and singular integral equation method, will be discussed. Under the setting of LEFM, comparison among those numerical methods will be presented; in particular, the advantages and disadvantages for each numerical method will be addressed.
I will also briefly cover some my recent work, mainly about solving crack problems in functionally graded materials by boundary element method.
