In field theory, conserved currents have well-known ambiguities. Thanks to the Poincare lemma, these ambiguities are physically harmless. Similar issues arise for lattice systems, but have not been explored previously. I will describe some general results which both ensure the existence of local currents for quantum lattice systems and describe the corresponding ambiguities. Applications include transport theory and the theory of topological invariants of gapped quantum systems. I also describe an interesting algebraic structure (1-shifted differential graded Lie algebra) which can be attached to any quantum lattice system. This is joint work with Nikita Sopenko.

This will be a Zoom talk delivered to the audience in MSB 1147.
