The Euler characteristic V - E + F is one of the most fundamental invariants in topology. The relationship between the Euler characteristic and geometry is described by the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, which produces an integral formula. The higher dimensional version of this result was proved by Chern. Chern also conjectured that the Euler characteristic of closed affine manifolds vanishes. The general case of Chern´s conjecture remains open. In this survey talk, we will discuss some of the history and recent progress.
