Simple geodesics on a hyperbolic surface (a new proof of McShane's Theorem)

Geometry/Topology

McShane classified cuspidal simple geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces, obtaining the remarkable McShane identity as a consequence. We give an elementary proof of this theorem. Our techniques involve studying the combinatorics of geodesics on the punctured torus, and both geometric and elementary. This talk will be accessible to graduate students.
