I will start by introducing surfaces embedded in the 3-sphere and the submanifolds they bound. And then we will see how the latter can be re-embbedded in S³ to be "straightened" - this is essentially a theorem of Fox's but with a modern approach. Finally we will generalize this to submanifolds of non-Haken manifolds, and end with a few interesting remarks.
