Gromov's h-Principle and other d-eversions

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Brad Safnuk, UC Davis
Location: 693 Kerr
Start time: Wed, Jan 19 2005, 12:10PM

A well known result in math is sphere eversion: one can turn a sphere inside out without introducing any crimps or other degeneracies (try it for yourself!) Much less well known are the tools one would use to prove such a statement. This talk will center around an elementary introduction to the h-Principle. There will be many example of this principle in action; most, like sphere eversion, will be completely surprising and counter intuitive.
