Local Properties of Heegaard Splittings

I will discuss a recent result concerning the way in which the spine of a strongly irreducible Heegaard splittings can intersect a closed ball in the manifold. An introductory discussion of Heegaard splittings and their spines will be followed by a statement of the result and, if time permits, an outline of the proof.
