One-sided Heegaard splittings

While a usual (two-sided) Heegaard surface for a 3-manifold separates the manifold into two handlebodies, a one-sided splitting surface splits the manifold open into a single handlebody. These splittings apply to a large class of 3-manifolds, however little is known about them, particularly compared to the two-sided case. The talk will cover basic definitions and properties, some of the known results and a sketch of recent work.
