An Introduction to Gromov-Witten Invariants

Gromov-Witten invariants are a relatively recent development in algebraic and symplectic geometry. Motivated by physicists, they are responsible for rather dramatic results. I will explain where they come from, why they are interesting, and if time permits, I may even give their definition.
