The distance function of a metric space requires that the side lengths of a geodesic triangle must satisfy the triangle inequality. In Riemannian symmetric spaces with non-positive curvature, there is a vector-valued distance function which can be used to place more general restrictions on polygons in these spaces. I will explain how these restrictions relate to configurations of points on the ideal boundary at infinity.
