A manifold M is reducible if it contains an essential sphere, and a Heegaard splitting of a manifold is reducible if there is an essential closed curve on the Heegaard surface that bounds a disk on both sides of the splitting. In this talk I will give basic definitions and show that the reducibility of a manifold implies the reducibility of every Heegaard splitting.
