Contact structures, Heegaard Floer homology, and fibred knots

Colloquium

After defining the objects mentioned in the title, I will sketch a proof that knot Floer homology detects fibred knots, and discuss an application.

The proof is an example of how taut foliations and contact structures can be used to transform topological information about knots and 3-manifolds into algebraic information about Heegaard Floer homology, which can be turned into new topological information.
