Long-time behavior of Ricci flow

Colloquium

Speaker: John Lott, University of Michigan
Location: 1147 MSB
Start time: Tue, Oct 30 2007, 4:10PM

Perelman proved Thurston's geometrization conjecture using Hamilton's Ricci flow. The first part of the talk will be an introduction to this work. Perelman gave enough information about the long-time behavior of a 3-dimensional Ricci flow to prove the validity of Thurston's geometric decomposition. However, it is not known whether Ricci flow performs the decomposition for you, i.e. whether as time passes one sees the various geometries appearing. I will give some results in this direction.
