Hyperbolic systems and global existence in 3d nonlinear elastodynamics

Colloquium

Speaker: Tom Sideris, UC Santa Barbara
Location: 1147 MSB
Start time: Tue, Dec 4 2007, 4:10PM

After reviewing the basic theory for the scalar wave equation, we will discuss some recent dispersive estimates for 3d isotropic symmetric systems of hyperbolic pde. We will then explain how to apply these estimates to the equations of motion for 3d isotropic elastic solids to establish the existence of global classical solutions to the initial value problem, near the reference configuration.
