A Friendly Introduction to the Plactic Monoid

Student-Run Discrete Math Seminar

Speaker: Steve Pon, UC Davis
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Thu, Jan 17 2008, 3:10PM

The plactic monoid is a wonderful structure in combinatorics that has immediate application to symmetric functions and representation theory (eg, Littlewood-Richardson rule), as well as group theory, physics and geometry. I'll define it and talk a little about some applications. This talk is intended to be accessible.
