An introduction to cobordism

Student-Run Geometry/Topology Seminar

Speaker: Rohit Thomas, UC Davis
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Tue, Jan 15 2008, 1:10PM

Cobordism is related to many other areas of topology, including algebraic topology and TQFTs. In this talk, I'll define what it means for manifolds to be cobordant, explain some of the underlying algebraic structure, and draw lots of pictures. I'll conclude by giving a brief introduction to characteristic classes and how they help to understand cobordism.
