Morse functions, Heegaard splittings and circle-valued Morse functions

I will explain the relationship between real Morse functions on 3-manifolds and handle decompositions, as well as how this structure relates with Heegard splittings and generalized Heegaard splittings. If time permits I will introduce circle-valued Morse functions on knot exteriors in S^3, and try to show why they are interesting.
