A celebrated work of Giroux gives a one-to-one correspondence between the following two types of additional structures on a closed oriented 3 manifold:

1. Open book decompositions up to positive stabilization, and

2. Oriented contact structures.

In this talk, I will introduce the above items with accompanying examples, and outline the above correspondence.
