In many important classes of groups, there is an interesting dichotomy between groups that contain non-abelian free subgroups and the ones that don't. Tits alternative for linear groups, as well as other classes of groups, is a prime example. In this talk, I will give a survey on this dichotomy, and discuss its relationship with the girth of Cayley graphs.
