Chinese Rings and coverings

Colloquium

Speaker: Zoran Šunić, Texas A&M University
Location: 1147 MSB
Start time: Wed, May 14 2008, 3:10PM

We model the Chinese Rings puzzle by a group of rooted tree automorphisms. We use this example as an excuse to talk about iterated monodromy groups. The discussion naturally leads to the self-covering of the unit interval by the tent map, which then leads to a whole family of groups of intermediate growth (one of which is the well known Grigorchuk group). This is a joint work with Volodymyr Nekrashevych.
