Hyperbolicity of the Curve Complex: an combinatorial translation of Minsky and Masur's result

Student-Run Geometry/Topology Seminar

In 1999 Howard Masur and Yair Misnky proved that the Curve Complex is an hyperbolic space. Some years later Brian Bowditch in his (self-contained) paper "Instersection Numbers and the Hyperbolicity of the Curve Complex" gave a third simplified proof of the same result with amazing improvements. Bowditch's paper is indeed an emulation of the first proof, it avoids the difficult steps of Masur-Misnky's proof using no more than intersection number arguments. The talk is based on Bowditch's paper and it goes from the basics to the details of the proof. A minimal of knowledge in geometry or topology is required.
