The Geometry of Semialgebraic Sets

Semialgebraic sets are subsets of Euclidean space cut out by finitely many polynomial equations and inequalities (or finite unions of such sets). In this talk, we present an introduction to the geometry of semi-algebraic sets, focusing on theoretical questions motivated by problems in polynomial optimization and semidefinite programming.
