Kakimizu complex and an application

Student-Run Geometry/Topology Seminar

The Kakimizu complex characterizes the disjoint isotopy classes of orientable seifert surfaces in the complement of a given knot. When restricted to incompressible surfaces, Kakimizu gives a useful distance metric on the 1-skeleton of the complex. He then uses the metric, along with sutured manifold theory, and plumbing to help classify incompressible seiftert surfaces for prime knots with 10 links or less.
