The Square Ice Model And Its Relation To Combinatorial Structures

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Josh Clement, UC Davis
Location: 3106 MSB
Start time: Wed, May 12 2010, 12:10PM

In statistical mechanics, the "square ice" model represents ice crystals as water molecules on a square grid. This model is related to such disparate structures as alternating sign matrices, fully packed loops, and relations between monotone triangles. Though the model is from statistical mechanics, it is through combinatorics that we learn about these interesting properties.
