A gentle introduction to category O and derived categories

This will be background for my talk in the algebra seminar later in the day. In the first half I will explain what category O is and in particular how I think about it. I will mainly focus on the Lie algebras sl_2 and sl_3. In the second half I will provide motivation from geometry/topology and representation theory as to the basic idea behind derived and triangulated categories.
