I will introduce Schur functions, Hall-Littlewood polynomials, and Kostka-Foulkes polynomials, and explain how they can be generalized to an arbitrary root system. I will explain how to prove the non-negativity of the coefficients of the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials using Lie algebra cohomology. No knowledge of Lie algebras or cohomology will be assumed.
