Say I give you a matrix A and x b are vectors. Are you sure you could solve the linear system Ax=b? Do you know how to do this fast? This lecture will show you the answer actually depends strongly on values of the entries of A,b and the conditions imposed on x. Say when x has entries that are polynomials, positive integers or is sparse we have exciting applications in algebraic geometry, optimization, or image processing. The purpose of this lecture is to offer graduate students a glimpse of some fascinating research directions in computational mathematics.
