Introduction to affine permutations

Student-Run Discrete Math Seminar

Speaker: Andrew Crites, University of Washinton
Location: 1147 MSB
Start time: Fri, Mar 4 2011, 11:00AM

In this talk I will introduce some of the combinatorics behind affine permutations. These are a generalization of classical permutations and can be viewed as a subgroup of the infinite symmetric group. I will review the theory of classical permutations in terms of Coxeter groups and reflection groups and then show how this theory extends to affine permutations. As an application, I will talk about the notion of pattern avoidance and describe how it relates to affine permutations.
