Littlewood-Richardson coefficients are the structure coefficients of Schur functions in the ring of symmetric functions. There exist beautiful combinatorial descriptions for these numbers. An easy way to prove these is to use a noncommutative approach due to Fomin and Greene. We will show how this can be generalized to obtain fusion coefficients in terms of crystal bases. I hope to demonstrate in this talk the intriguing and fruitful interaction between combinatorics, representation theory, and mathematical physics.
