Computing tropical linear spaces and A-discriminants

Algebra & Discrete Mathematics

Speaker: Felipe Rincon, UC Berkeley
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Fri, Nov 4 2011, 2:10PM

In this talk I will explain what tropical linear spaces are and how they can be used to get a handle on classical A-discriminants. I will also describe a very fast algorithm for computing them, which makes some computational applications of tropical geometry now viable. If time allows, I will also show some software implementations. No previous knowledge of tropical geometry (or discriminants) will be assumed.
