Recognizing reductive groups

Student-Run Discrete Math Seminar

Speaker: Ryan Reich, UCLA
Location: 3106 MSB
Start time: Thu, Feb 16 2012, 11:00AM

Reductive groups are a general class of groups that can be studied without knowing very much about their elements. Instead, they can be described from the point of view of representation theory in purely structural terms using a discrete object called their "root data". I will describe a few recognition principles for reductive groups and sketch their application to a geometric construction of certain reductive groups, called the Satake equivalence.
