I'll lead a somewhat informal discussion about tensors, and attempt to answer the following questions. What is a tensor? What is a symmetric tensor? Where do tensors show up in the real world, and what are they good for? Only a basic background in linear algebra will be assumed - i.e. definitions of a vector space a basis, and linear maps and their ranks.
