Given two reduced 3-manifolds M1 and M2 with Heegaard surfaces S1 and S2, we can consider the Heegaard splitting of their connect sum M1#M2 induced by these surfaces. The Gordon conjecture states that this Heegaard splitting is stabilized iff either S1 or S2 are stabilized. Recently two proofs were announced, one by Ruifeng Qiu and one by David Bachman, using radically different methods. We will relate Bachman's proof using the language of Jesse Johnson's thin position.
