There are many restrictions on fundamental groups of smooth complex projective varieties. In my talk I will prove that every finitely presented group appears as the fundamental group of an (irreducible) complex projective variety with normal crossing singularities, answering a question by Carlos Simpson. The proof relies upon interaction between algebraic geometry, 3-dimensional topology and hyperbolic geometry.
