The existence of consistent five dimensional supersymmetric conformal field theories with exceptional global symmetries has been conjectured over two decades ago, but their fundamental formulation still remains a challenge. Recent progress in localization techniques produced remarkable new evidence for this conjecture, in the form of index formulas for local operators that exhibit the global symmetry in a surprising way. These results can be extended to operators supported on a half line, which may provide more hints about the fundamental formulation.
