I will discuss how to compute to mass renormalization in string theory. The conventional way of computing string theory amplitudes is not sufficient to compute mass renormalization of massive states in string theory. The aim of this talk is to define a suitable off-shell continuation of the Polyakov approach. Another important ingredient in computing mass renormalization is to decompose the moduli space or Riemann surfaces into various subspaces (In the language of physicists, we call them one-particle reducible and one-particle irreducible subspaces). Then the off-shell continuation along with the decomposition of the moduli space can be used to compute mass-renormalization in string theory.
