Time and band limiting: a source of mathematical problems

Signals in communication theory or two dimensional images in medical imaging or geophysics need to be truncated in both physical and frequency space. These natural operations pose a number of issues and gives rise to a host of mathematical problems ranging from numerical analysis to integrable systems. I will show some old and new results to indicate that there are still lots of gems buried in this very classical field.
