Outer measures such as for example Lebesgue outer measure are usually a stepping stone in the development of measure theory. We explain that a useful sub-additive outer integration theory can be developed even in situations when too few measurable sets exists to build a measure theroy. This theory has helped to understand time-frequency analysis, we will present a conceptual way of looking at almost everywhere convergence of Fourier series.
