We discuss a recent result proving dimerization in a class of SU(n) invariant
quantum spin chains (joint work with Daniel Ueltschi, arXiv:1701.03983). The new work
fills in a gap in a string of `magical’ results on this class of models that have been known
for quite some time. The new work is based on an adaptation of the Peierls argument in
statistical mechanics and is rather `non-magical'.
