Global smooth solutions to the 3-D compressible Euler equations

he compressible Euler equations with the physical vacuum singularity is a degenerate hyperbolic system of conservation laws. The physical vacuum condition requires that the sound speed vanish like the square-root of the distance function to the vacuum boundary -- this is required in order to allow the vacuum front to accelerate. Because classical approaches using symmetrizers does not work for this system, the local existence theory has only recently been developed. In this talk, I will discuss a new framework for large global in time solutions. This is joint work with T. Sideris.
