An algebraic variety X over the complex numbers -- the solution set to a system of polynomial equations with complex coefficients -- is naturally a topological space. The fundamental group of X is a rich invariant, which has a lot more structure than the fundamental group of an arbitrary topological space. I'll explain some of this structure, focusing on basic examples and computations.
