Thin and bridge position for manifolds other than the 3-sphere

By a result of Abby Thompson, if thin position for a knot in the 3-sphere is not bridge position, then there exists an incompressible, meridional planar surface in the knot's complement. I will present work by David Bachman that generalizes this result to closed, irreducible 3-manifolds. This is a continuation of my previous talk.
