I will talk about symplectic manifolds and how to break them down in different ways into more understandable pieces. We will look at different kinds of submanifolds of a symplectic manifold and allow these to have singularities in controlled ways. These two themes (decompositions and singular submanifolds) will connect to each other and appear in many different forms, as I describe some of the current programs my research is working on.
