The finite-dimensional representations of the classical Lie groups and algebras have a beautiful description in terms of Schur functions and other symmetric functions. The finite-dimensional representation theory of quantum affine algebras seems to be related to that of the classical Lie algebras they contain in tantalizing ways, allowing us to work in the ring of symmetric functions and draw surprising conclusions about representations of these infinite objects.

This is joint with the Discrete Mathematics Seminar. The host is Anne Schilling.
