Stability of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws

Colloquium

Speaker: Dr. Marta Lewicka, Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences
Location: 693 Kerr
Start time: Tue, Feb 19 2002, 4:10PM

In this lecture we discuss the global well posedness and stability of a class of systems of first order nonlinear PDEs, called systems of conservation laws.

We begin by explaining the basic concepts associated with such systems, such as the finite time breakdown of smooth solutions, wave interactions and cancellations, blow up in wave production.

We then give an account of some recent results on uniqueness and stability of admissible weak solutions, in case of initial data with small total variation.

Finally, we hope to present some of the speaker's work in progress, concerning the stability of solution patterns containing large waves.
