I will explain the idea of using theory of matrix integrals to derive Witten's formula that connects special values of Riemann zeta function (including positive odd integers!) and the volume of the space of representations of the fundamental group of a surface in a compact group. Since Witten's result follows from 2D Quantum Yang-Mills theory/ 3D Chern-Simons gauge theory, my derivation thus shows that these physical theories are equavalent to matrix integral theory.
