Mikio Sato and Soliton Theory

Colloquium

Speaker: Motohico Mulase, UC Davis
Location: 693 Kerr
Start time: Mon, Feb 24 2003, 4:10PM

Mikio Sato of RIMS, Kyoto University, is receiving the 2002/03 Wolf Prize in Mathematics for his creation of "algebraic analysis," holonomic QFT, and "a unified theory of soliton equations." The talk is aimed at explaining the origin of this third discovery, which connects representation theory, algebraic geometry, and soliton equations. I also plan to survey some of the major accomplishments in this field since the work of Sato by numerous people including the most recent ones.
